Originating in Ireland and Britain, it was enjoyed among young women around Halloween, a time when the future was believed to be easier to see.
Alongside games such as “apple bobbing,” in which players try to grab floating apples using only their mouths, this practice was one of Halloween’s traditional games and traveled to North America with European immigrants.
