Origins & History
Western astrology is grounded in the framework established since the 2nd century, when the Alexandrian scholar Ptolemy wrote the "Tetrabiblos" (Four Books), a text so influential it has been called "the bible of astrology" and has been widely respected across Europe from the medieval period into the modern era.
The Tetrabiblos already outlined a framework connecting to present-day Western astrology, covering the natures of the planets and zodiac signs, the prediction of large-scale national events (mundane astrology), and the interpretation of an individual’s natal chart. This system was further refined and developed in the modern era, becoming the globally practiced form of contemporary Western astrology.
How It Works
- 01Gather the birth date, birth time, and birthplace.
- 02From this information, calculate the positions of the sun, moon, and each planet within the twelve zodiac signs at the moment of birth, along with the houses (twelve divisions representing areas of life), using astronomical ephemeris data.
- 03Compile the calculated positions into a single chart to create the horoscope (natal chart).
- 04Read the combined meaning of each planet, sign, and house to interpret character and life tendencies.
What It Reveals
Western astrology is well suited to reading a broad range of themes—love, career, money, life in general, and compatibility—as innate traits and areas of natural aptitude. However, it has a limitation in that, without an accurate birth time, the precision of the house calculations declines, making finer details of the reading less reliable.
