Aura reading is a practice, widespread in contemporary Western spiritual culture, that reads mental and physical states and emotional tendencies from the colors of the “aura” said to surround the body. Origins & History
The word “aura” itself has been used since ancient times, but the modern concept of “aura reading” — visualizing it as layers of color surrounding the body and linking it to personality and mental and physical states — is said to have taken shape within the Western Spiritualist and Theosophical circles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Figures associated with the Theosophical Society, including Charles W. Leadbeater, are said to have introduced the idea by linking colors with the concept of chakras, and this is said to have become the prototype for the form widely known today.
Aura reading is therefore not a tradition passed down continuously since ancient times, but rather a relatively new part of a spiritual culture that formed in the modern era. Today, often linked with ideas from color psychology, it is enjoyed mainly in the West as a casual method of self-assessment and counseling.
