What is Kieu Fortune-Telling (Bói Kiều)?
Kieu Fortune-Telling is a Vietnamese bibliomancy practice in which a person opens Vietnam’s national epic poem, The Tale of Kieu (Truyện Kiều), at random and reads the verse their eye falls on as the answer. It is a beloved custom at turning points such as the Lunar New Year, when people open the book to glimpse what lies ahead or seek guidance for life.

Origins & History
Kieu Fortune-Telling is a bibliomancy practice built around The Tale of Kieu (Truyện Kiều), a long narrative poem by the Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Du. The poem, which tells of the turbulent life of its heroine Thúy Kiều, is widely recited and cherished throughout Vietnam, and the custom of opening it at random and reading a passage as an answer took root among the people.
Holding the closed book while silently forming a question in mind, a person opens it at random and reads the verse on that page as the answer. Alongside the custom of reciting the poem from memory for pleasure and the wordplay of passing verses back and forth from one passage to the next, this practice is counted among the traditional ways of enjoying The Tale of Kieu.
