Cartomancy is a popular form of divination that draws from an everyday standard 52-card playing deck, reading the outcome of love or work from the combination of suit and number. It originated in Europe and has also taken root in Vietnam, where it is known as Bói bài tây.

Origins & History

Cartomancy is a practice that repurposes the standard 52-card playing deck—already widely used for games—directly as a divination tool. Because it can be taken up easily without owning a dedicated set of fortune-telling cards, it has been embraced in European households and among the general public.

The same method spread to Vietnam as well, where it remains popular today as Bói bài tây ("Western card divination"). Compared with tarot, which uses a dedicated deck, its system is simpler, centering on reading fortune or an answer from the combination of suit and number.

What It Reveals

It is well suited to giving quick answers to everyday questions, such as the course of a romance or an either-or decision. Because it lacks the fine-grained symbolic system of a dedicated deck like tarot, it tends to be used more for clear either-or or good-or-bad-fortune judgments than for intricate psychological readings.
