Dream temple incubation was a religious practice in ancient Egypt and Greece in which people would stay overnight at a temple and sleep there, hoping to receive a message from the gods through a dream. In Greece especially, it was widely practiced at temples dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine, by people seeking to be healed of illness. This ritual is no longer practiced today.

Origins & History
Dream temple incubation (in Greek, "enkoimesis") was an ancient religious practice in which people would stay overnight at a temple and sleep there, hoping to receive a message or healing from the gods through a dream. In ancient Egypt, it is said to have been practiced for more than 4,000 years: after purifying themselves at a temple, people would sleep there, and priests would interpret their dreams and offer guidance.
In ancient Greece, more than 300 temples known as "Asclepieia," dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine, were built across the Mediterranean, with those at Epidaurus, Kos, Athens, Corinth, and Pergamon among the best known. After purifying themselves, worshippers would sleep in a special chamber of the temple called the "abaton," and priests would interpret the message conveyed by Asclepius or his serpent messenger as it appeared in their dreams, prescribing a course of treatment. This ritual is no longer practiced today.
