HYDROMANCY

What is Hydromancy?

Hydromancy is a form of divination, passed down from ancient Greece and Rome as well as the Middle East, that reads omens from the colors and shapes of ripples reflected on the surface of water. It shares something of the nature of crystal gazing, in which one gazes intently at a still surface, but it is distinguished by reading the movement and color of the water itself.

Origins & History

Hydromancy is a form of divination that reads omens from the color of a water surface, the shape of its ripples, and the way rings spread out when a pebble is dropped in. It is said to have been practiced in ancient Greece and Rome, among the Germanic peoples, and in parts of the Eastern Christian world.

In Renaissance-era grimoires, hydromancy was counted among the “seven forbidden arts,” alongside necromancy, geomancy, meteoromancy, pyromancy, palmistry, and scapulimancy. Today, almost no practitioners remain.

How It Works

  1. 01Decide on a single question you want to ask.
  2. 02Upload a photo of a water surface.
  3. 03Check how the ripples spread and the coloring of the water (if no photo is available, one symbolic ripple pattern is chosen at random instead).
  4. 04Read the symbolic meaning indicated by the selected pattern.

What It Reveals

Hydromancy is well suited to receiving a sense of today’s fortune, the mood of the near term, or a vague hint about life’s direction. Because it reads something as changeable as the surface of water, it does not explain fine-grained circumstances, and it is best used as a divination approached quietly, with a settled mind.
