Unlike ordinary astrology, which uses a person’s birth time, horary astrology is a long-established branch of astrology that constructs a horoscope from the positions of the celestial bodies at “the moment the diviner receives the question” and derives an answer from it. It developed in Europe and the Middle East from the medieval to the early modern period and has been used for specific one-off questions, such as the whereabouts of a lost item or the outcome of a lawsuit.

Christian Astrology (1647), written by the 17th-century English astrologer William Lilly, is known as a landmark text that systematically compiled the interpretive rules of horary astrology, and it continues to influence the practice today.
