NEPHOMANCY
What is Nephomancy (Cloud Reading)?
Nephomancy is a divination practice, found across the ancient world, that reads signs from the shapes and movements of clouds in the sky. It is positioned as a subset of the broader category of "aeromancy," which reads fortune from weather and sky conditions in general, and records tell of it being used to divine the outcome of a journey or the result of a conflict.

Origins & History
Nephomancy is a divination practice that reads signs from the shapes and movements of clouds in the sky, and it falls under the broader category of "aeromancy," which reads fortune from weather and sky conditions in general. A 5th-century record tells the story of reading the shapes clouds formed into people or animals to divine the outcome of a battle.
Such sky-based divinations are also mentioned as a practice to be shunned in the Book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, showing that while widely practiced across the ancient world, it was also one of the divinations viewed with religious disfavor. Today, hardly any systematic practice of it remains.
How It Works
- 01Settle on a single question to ask.
- 02Upload a photo of the sky.
- 03Check the shape and density of the clouds (if no photo is available, a symbolic cloud shape is chosen at random).
- 04Read the symbolic meaning indicated by the chosen cloud shape.
What It Reveals
It is well suited to receiving a light sign about today’s fortune or the mood of the coming days. Because it reads something as fleeting as the shape of clouds, it is not suited to pinning down fine details or long-term destiny, and is best enjoyed simply as an occasion to look up at the sky.
