What is Ilm al-Raml?

Ilm al-Raml, Arabic for “the science of the sand,” is a traditional form of sand divination. A staff is used to mark rows of dots in the sand to create a sequence of odd and even counts, from which one of sixteen figures is derived and the answer is read. It is the source practice from which Western geomancy descends.

Origins & History

Ilm al-Raml is a traditional form of divination whose name means “the science of the sand” in Arabic. By the 12th century it was practiced across a wide area including North Africa, Egypt, and Syria, and it is said to take its name from the method of striking the sand with a staff to create rows of dots.

The resulting rows of dots are judged as odd or even, and through repeated calculation one of sixteen figures is derived. This system was translated into Latin in the medieval period and spread to Europe, where it developed independently as “Western geomancy.” Even today, altered forms of the practice survive in West Africa and the Indian Ocean region, among other places.
