Nine Star Ki is a divination that maps a person’s date of birth onto a "birth star" and a "month star" among the nine stars (such as the First White Water Star), and reads fortune by combining these with the five elements and directions. Origins & History
Nine Star Ki is a divination said to have been organized and systematized in Japan in 1924 by Sonoda Shinjiro, building on traditional Chinese-derived divination and geomantic methods (connected to feng shui). Its distinguishing feature is that it combines the ancient Chinese theory of the five elements with the pattern of the Later Heaven Bagua, which arranges nine stars around the compass directions.
The "birth star," calculated from the year of birth, is said to represent one’s nature from adulthood onward, while the "month star," calculated from the month of birth, is said to represent one’s innate temperament and physical characteristics; reading the two together is the basic approach. Compatibility judgments are also based on the generative and controlling relationships among the five elements.
How It Works
- 01From the date of birth, calculate the corresponding "birth star" (one of nine, from the First White Water Star to the Ninth Purple Fire Star).
- 02From the month of birth, calculate the "month star" as well.
- 03Combine the five-element nature indicated by the birth star and month star with the direction associated with each of the nine stars.
- 04Overlay the cycling pattern (the shifting position of the stars) for the year or period of interest to read the flow of fortune and favorable directions.
What It Reveals
It is well suited to reading innate traits and aptitudes for work and money, as well as the yearly flow of fortune and favorable directions for moving or travel. On the other hand, since the correspondence between the nine stars and directions is fixed by a systematic calculation, it cannot capture fine, highly individual emotional nuance, and it is often used together with other fate-reading systems.
