What is Weton?

Weton is a traditional Javanese birthday system that combines the seven-day week (Monday through Sunday) with the five-day "pasaran" (market day) cycle, judging personality, compatibility, and auspicious timing from the combination formed within the 35-day "selapan" cycle and the sum of numeric values called "neptu" assigned to each day.

Weton is a traditional Javanese birthday system built from the combination of the seven-day week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and the five-day "pasaran" (market day) cycle—Pahing, Kliwon, Legi, Wage, and Pon. The overlap of these two cycles produces a 35-day cycle known as "selapan," and the combination of weekday and pasaran on the day a person is born becomes that person’s own unique weton.

Both the weekday and the pasaran carry an assigned numerical value called "neptu," and the sum of the two is used to judge a person’s character and fortune. It remains an active custom in Java today, used to judge compatibility before major decisions such as marriage and to choose auspicious timing for planting and harvest. The combined neptu total of a couple is read for compatibility by placing it into one of seven categories, ranging from "PEGAT," indicating a tendency toward divorce, to "SUJANAN," indicating frequent conflict.

How It Works

1. 01Determine the day of the seven-day week (Monday through Sunday) on which the person was born, from their date of birth.
2. 02From the same date of birth, determine the five-day pasaran (one of Pahing, Kliwon, Legi, Wage, or Pon).
3. 03Add together the neptu values assigned to the weekday and the pasaran.
4. 04Use the resulting sum to interpret personality and fortune, or, for compatibility readings, to identify which of the seven categories applies.

What It Reveals

Weton is well suited to reading innate personality tendencies as well as compatibility with a marriage partner and timing favorable for starting new undertakings. At the same time, this system is a classification method rooted in Javanese folk tradition, and because its seven compatibility categories (among other elements) work within a fixed framework, it cannot fully capture the finer nuances of an individual relationship.
