Origins & History
Panchanga is a Sanskrit word meaning “five elements,” referring to a Hindu calendar composed of five calendrical elements: weekday (vara), lunar day (tithi), lunar mansion (nakshatra), yoga, and karana. Its origins are said to trace back to the astronomical calendar calculations of the Vedic period.
These elements are calculated daily and used as a practical calendar to judge auspicious days suited to rituals and events, or inauspicious days to be avoided, forming part of Indian astrology (Jyotisha). It is still widely consulted in the daily life of Hindus today when deciding dates for weddings, moving house, or starting a business.
