What is Sukuyo (Esoteric Buddhist Astrology)?
Sukuyo is a form of astrology within the esoteric Buddhist tradition that derives a person’s "honmyōshuku," one of 27 lunar mansions, from their birth date, and reads personality and compatibility from the relationship between mansions. It is built on a scripture carrying elements of Indian astrology and reached Japan during the Heian period.

Origins & History
Sukuyo is a form of astrology built on the Xiuyao Jing, a scripture that retains strong elements of Indian astrology. This scripture is said to have been translated into Chinese in the eighth century, and it transmits a system for divining auspiciousness and timing based on the 27 lunar mansions (dividing the moon’s path across the celestial sphere into 27 positions), the twelve zodiacal signs, and the seven luminaries (the days of the week).
It is said to have reached Japan during the Heian period when Kūkai, who had studied esoteric Buddhism in Tang China, brought the scripture back with him, and it developed there into a branch of esoteric Buddhism known as Sukuyōdō. The form of Sukuyo widely used today is a simplified method that determines a person’s "honmyōshuku"—the lunar mansion under which they were born, out of the 27—and reads personality and compatibility from the pattern of relationship between mansions (categories such as stable, friendly, or conflicting).
How It Works
- 01Calculate the "honmyōshuku," the lunar mansion of birth out of the 27, from the birth date.
- 02Read basic personality tendencies from the qualities said to belong to the honmyōshuku.
- 03Compare the combination of one’s own honmyōshuku and the other person’s against the patterns of relationship between mansions.
- 04Judge tendencies in compatibility from the relationship pattern (stable, friendly, conflicting, and so on).
What It Reveals
Sukuyo is well suited to reading innate personality tendencies as well as compatibility in romantic and interpersonal relationships. At the same time, because the relationship between mansions is classified into a limited set of patterns, it is well suited to grasping compatibility between two people as a broad tendency, but it cannot fully account for the finer particulars of an individual relationship.
