Origins & History
Parrot astrology (kili josiyam) is a traditional street divination practice carried out in South India’s Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh states. A trained parakeet—typically a rose-ringed parakeet or Alexandrine parakeet—picks a single card with its beak from a stack offered by the diviner, who then reads the person’s fortune from its imagery.
The cards depict Hindu gods and saints, and are known to come in sets of 27. The parrot is regarded as a sacred bird associated with Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, and this street-corner divination has long been a familiar sight. In recent years, laws protecting animal welfare have restricted the capture and keeping of birds, and the number of practitioners of this divination is said to be declining.
