GRAPHOLOGY

What is Graphology?

Graphology is a method of personality analysis, developed in Europe, that reads a writer’s personality and psychological state from traits of their handwriting such as slant, pressure, and size. It is a system more often treated as personality analysis than as divination.

Origins & History

The idea of reading a writer’s personality from their handwriting existed in various parts of Europe from early times, but it spread widely after Jean-Hippolyte Michon, in 19th-century France, coined the term “graphology” and systematized the correspondence between handwriting and personality, giving it the trappings of an academic discipline.

Subsequently, into the 20th century, graphology was at times used, mainly in Europe, as a factor in hiring interviews and assessments of occupational aptitude. However, many psychological studies have found scientific evidence linking handwriting to personality to be lacking, and today it is positioned as one method among personality-assessment techniques.

How It Works

  1. 01Upload a photo of the handwriting you want assessed.
  2. 02Detect handwriting traits such as slant, pressure, size, and line spacing.
  3. 03Map the detected traits onto the traditional personality types used in graphology.
  4. 04Combine multiple traits to read tendencies in personality, work style, and interpersonal relationships.

What It Reveals

Graphology is well suited to reading a writer’s personality tendencies and traits in how they approach work and interpersonal relationships. At the same time, handwriting can change easily depending on physical condition, writing implement, and the situation in which it is written, and scientific evidence linking handwriting to personality is said to be lacking, so it is appropriate to treat it as one point of reference rather than a definitive statement of personality.
