NUMEROLOGY

What is Numerology?

Numerology reduces each digit of a birth date by repeated addition until a single digit (or certain specific numbers) remains, then reads personality traits and life tendencies from the resulting number, such as the "Life Path Number." It is said to trace back to the Pythagorean school, and was systematized in the modern West before spreading worldwide.

Origins & History

Numerology is said to derive from the tradition of the Pythagorean school, active in ancient Greece in the 6th century BCE. The Pythagoreans are said to have found mystical meaning in numbers and to have practiced techniques such as "isopsephy," which converted letters and names into numerical values for interpretation.

Building on this foundation, in the 16th century Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa organized a system assigning numerical values to Latin letters in his work "Three Books of Occult Philosophy," and in the 19th and 20th centuries several gematria-style systems (correspondences between letters and numbers) developed in the English-speaking world. The now-familiar method of summing the digits of a birth date down to a single number spread through this process of modern Western systematization.

How It Works

  1. 01Break down all the digits of the birth date.
  2. 02Add the digits together repeatedly until a single digit remains (or a specific number such as 11 or 22).
  3. 03Interpret the meaning assigned to the resulting number, such as the Life Path Number.

What It Reveals

Numerology is well suited to reading innate personality tendencies and one’s aptitudes in life, love, career, and money through simple numerical meanings. At the same time, calculation methods and the meanings assigned to numbers vary between schools, and a single number cannot fully account for the complex events of a life.
