Kabbalah numerology is founded on "gematria," a concept developed within Jewish mysticism, or Kabbalah. Gematria assigns a numeric value to each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet (aleph = 1, bet = 2, and so on), and derives meaning from the sum of the values in a word or name—an interpretive method used since ancient times to explore connections between words in sacred texts.
From the modern era onward, this gematria-based thinking spread more broadly as a form of numerology, coming to be used as a method of divining personality and destiny by converting a name or date of birth into numeric values. How names in languages other than Hebrew should be mapped onto these values differs by school, and there is no single, universally agreed method of calculation.
