Origins & History
Mahabote is a traditional weekday-based divination long practiced in Myanmar. Its most distinctive feature is splitting Wednesday alone into two halves around noon, so that the seven days of the week become eight divisions in total. Each division is assigned a guardian animal, a direction, and a corresponding planet, and the division of one’s birth weekday is said to represent one’s basic nature.
This system is thought to have developed uniquely in Myanmar under the influence of Indian Vedic astrology and Buddhist calendrical calculation, and it is still widely used today as a guide for choosing life milestones such as naming, marriage, and days for making merit at temples.
