Origins & History
The "Tzolk’in" used in Mayan calendar divination is a 260-day sacred calendar formed by combining 20 day-signs (day names) with 13 numbers, completing one full cycle over the number of days equal to the least common multiple of 20 and 13. The origins of this calendar system are widely shared across Mesoamerica, and it is thought to predate the appearance of Maya inscriptions.
Several Maya communities in the Guatemalan highlands continue to use this calendar today, for agricultural work and ceremonies as well as in the training of calendar diviners known as "ajq’ij." The basic method is to convert a date of birth into this 260-day cycle and to read one’s nature from the combination of day-sign and number that corresponds to the day of birth.
